Position Summary:

The Vice President of Design at Irvine Company Retail Properties is responsible for all three Regional Centers: Fashion Island, The MarketPlace and Irvine Spectrum. This individual will have oversight over design and developed concepts and is the key point of contact in engaging with external consultants on projects. Responsible for assisting leadership in planning and design of retail projects and developing guidelines, themes and criteria. Works in concert with outside design, architecture and engineering firms as needed. Reviews and directs project planning and design in accordance with established guidelines.

In addition to direct responsibility for the Regional Properties, this candidate will collaborate and support the 40+ Neighborhood retail properties in the portfolio.

Job Duties:

  • Sets the design direction for retail opportunities and prioritizes work accordingly
  • Oversees 3D modeling of all new ideas for upcoming projects not limited to the following.
  • Provides technical architectural insights to de-risk and facilitate projects
  • Provides Leadership and support to the in-house design team
    • Mentorship and guidance for direct reports as well as leadership by influence of peers and team members
  • Engage with senior leadership effectively and provide well aligned solutions
  • Collaborates across the retail division - keeps Leasing, development and construction informed of ongoing design progress
  • Responsible for design management of the day to day for external consultant work
    • Coordinates meetings
    • Provides scope documents, develops proposals and reviews contracts
    • Provides design critique and ensures compliance with intent, best practices and Irvine standards
    • Hires and directs consultants - charts and maintains course 
  • Lead the development and organization of design collateral for presentations to senior leadership
  • Support in the development of tenant design criteria’s  
  • Partner with Construction Managers during construction
  • Facilitates project results through internal and external relationships
  • Establishes clear project goals with the team and is accountable to department results 
  • Continuously seeks to streamline process, and identifies new ways of working
  • Able to fully maximize technology and design tools to come up with and present ideas
  • Actively engage with industry innovation

Minimum Qualifications / Other Expectations:

  • Professional degree in architecture from an accredited university
  • Experience leading a team of architects and consultants
  • Ability to organize projects and prioritize tasks
  • Team player with good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and visual (ability to draw and sketch) communication skills
  • Exceptional architecture and building design capabilities (skilled in all architectural styles, especially classical and traditional styles of European, North African and California Spanish Colonial)
  • Attention to detail
  • Computer program experience (Google Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, CAD)
  • NCARB or Licensed Architect
  • 10 - 15 years of relevant retail design experience
